Kardamoutsa Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Timios Stavros (Holy Cross), is located near the village of Karydi, about 15 kilometers west of Elounda on Crete. It was founded at the end of the 16th century by the monks Makarios, Manassis, and Xenophon Katsaras. The monastery thrived during the 17th century but was abandoned by the early 20th century.

The complex has a fortress-like architecture, developed in several stages from the 15th to 18th centuries. The main church, a simple vaulted structure, is surrounded by the remains of cells, storage rooms, a mill, a stable, and a guesthouse. The monastery’s renovations have been ongoing, with efforts to restore the buildings and preserve its rich history.

A local legend adds a touch of mystique to the place: it is said that anyone who attempts to cut a branch from a large oak tree at the entrance will lose their hand, unless they are completely sinless. The monastery’s feast day is celebrated on September 14, attracting visitors who can stay in the restored guesthouse.
