Karoumes Beach is a stunning and remote beach located on the northeastern coast of Crete, near the village of Sitia in the Lasithi region. Known for its wild beauty, clear waters, and peaceful atmosphere, Karoumes Beach is often considered one of the most picturesque and unspoiled beaches on the island. It’s an ideal destination for those looking for solitude and a natural, undeveloped beach experience.

Highlights of Karoumes Beach:

  • Secluded and Tranquil: Karoumes is relatively isolated and less accessible than some of Crete’s more famous beaches, which contributes to its serene and peaceful atmosphere. It’s perfect for visitors who want to escape the crowds and enjoy a more natural environment.
  • Clear, Blue Waters: The waters at Karoumes Beach are incredibly clear and have vibrant turquoise shades, making it ideal for swimming. The shallow, calm waters near the shore are great for relaxing and wading, while the deeper areas offer good spots for snorkeling.
  • Unique Pebble Beach: The beach is covered in smooth, round pebbles rather than sand, creating a distinctive look and feel. The pebbles, combined with the clear waters, give the beach an almost surreal appearance, adding to its charm.
  • Dramatic Landscape: Surrounded by cliffs, hills, and rocky outcrops, Karoumes Beach offers stunning views of the rugged landscape. The natural beauty of the area is further enhanced by the nearby Cape Sidero, creating a breathtaking setting.

Accessibility:

  • By Car: Getting to Karoumes Beach requires a bit of effort. It is accessed via a dirt road, which can be a challenge, especially for those driving a regular car. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for the final stretch, as the road can be rough and uneven. From Sitia, it’s about a 15-minute drive to the point where the road turns into a dirt path that leads to the beach.
  • Hiking: After parking, there is a short hike (about 10-15 minutes) down to the beach. The walk is relatively easy, though it is rocky, so appropriate footwear is advised.

Facilities:

  • Unorganized Beach: Karoumes Beach is completely unorganized, which means there are no sunbeds, umbrellas, or beach bars. This is one of the reasons why it retains its natural charm and peaceful atmosphere. Visitors should come prepared with their own supplies like food, drinks, and sun protection.
  • Basic Amenities: There are no toilets or showers on the beach itself, so visitors should plan accordingly. The closest amenities can be found in the town of Sitia, around 25 km away, where you can find restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Nearby Attractions:

  • Sitia: The town of Sitia is the closest settlement to Karoumes Beach and offers a variety of services, including restaurants, tavernas, shops, and accommodations. It’s a great place to visit after spending the day at the beach to enjoy some local Cretan cuisine and explore the charming harbor area.
  • Toplou Monastery: Located just outside Sitia, the Toplou Monastery is a fascinating historical site worth visiting. This fortified monastery, dating back to the 15th century, has a museum with religious artifacts and stunning views of the surrounding area.
  • Vai Palm Grove: Not too far from Karoumes Beach, the famous Vai Palm Grove is one of the largest natural palm forests in Europe. The beach near Vai is a popular tourist spot, offering a beautiful combination of sand and palm trees.
  • Zakros Palace and Gorge of the Dead: To the east of Karoumes Beach, the Zakros Archaeological Site features the ruins of a Minoan palace, and the nearby Gorge of the Dead is a popular hiking destination. The area is steeped in history and provides opportunities to explore Crete’s rich past.

Tips:

  • Prepare for Seclusion: Since Karoumes is a remote and unorganized beach, it’s important to bring everything you might need for the day, including water, food, sunscreen, and anything else you want for a comfortable experience.
  • Comfortable Footwear: The path leading down to the beach is rocky, so wear sturdy shoes to make the short hike more comfortable.
  • Visit Early: The beach is quiet and peaceful, but since it’s relatively isolated, it’s a good idea to arrive early to secure a good spot and enjoy the tranquility before it potentially gets busier in the afternoon.
  • Be Self-Sufficient: There are no services at Karoumes Beach, so be sure to pack everything you need for the day. If you’re planning to spend several hours at the beach, bringing a parasol or other shade would be wise.

Best Time to Visit:

  • Spring and Autumn: The best time to visit Karoumes Beach is during the spring or autumn, when the weather is pleasant, and the beach is less crowded. The summer months are warmer but can bring more visitors, so visiting earlier or later in the day can help you avoid the heat and crowds.
  • Summer: If you visit during summer, early mornings or later afternoons are ideal, as the beach can become warmer and more popular during midday.

Karoumes Beach is a fantastic choice for those looking to enjoy a peaceful and scenic beach in an isolated corner of Crete. With its clear waters, pebbly shoreline, and dramatic surroundings, it offers a truly natural and unspoiled environment perfect for relaxation, swimming, and appreciating Crete’s wild beauty.
