The Omalos Plateau is a picturesque and historically significant plateau located in the Chania region of Crete, Greece. Nestled at an altitude of about 1,100 meters (3,610 feet), it is surrounded by the dramatic White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and is a gateway to the famous Samaria Gorge, one of the longest gorges in Europe.

Key Features:

1. Geography and Location:

  • Omalos Plateau is approximately 40 kilometers south of Chania and can be reached via a scenic drive through winding mountain roads.
  • The plateau covers an area of about 15 square kilometers, forming a bowl-like landscape surrounded by towering peaks.

2. Natural Beauty:

  • The plateau is characterized by its fertile fields, which are cultivated with wheat, potatoes, and other crops. In spring, the fields are lush and green, while in winter, the plateau is often blanketed in snow.
  • It offers stunning views of the White Mountains, known for their rugged and majestic beauty.

3. Access to Samaria Gorge:

  • Omalos is most famous for being the starting point of the Samaria Gorge National Park, a major draw for hikers from around the world.
  • The gorge starts at Xyloskalo, a trailhead located at the edge of the plateau, and descends to the village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea.

4. Historical Significance:

  • The plateau played a crucial role in Cretan resistance movements, especially during the Ottoman era and World War II, as it served as a hideout for rebels due to its remote and strategic location.

5. Flora and Fauna:

  • Omalos is part of the Natura 2000 network, highlighting its ecological importance.
  • The area is home to Cretan wild goats (Kri-Kri) and other unique wildlife, as well as endemic plants that thrive in its mountainous terrain.

6. Climate:

  • Due to its high altitude, Omalos experiences cooler summers and cold winters, with snow often covering the plateau from late autumn to early spring.

7. Points of Interest:

  • Xyloskalo: The wooden staircase and trailhead leading into Samaria Gorge.
  • Mountain Taverns: The plateau features traditional taverns offering local specialties such as lamb, wild greens, and cheese.
  • Omalos Cave: An intriguing cave with historical and archaeological significance.

8. Activities:

  • Hiking: Whether trekking through Samaria Gorge or exploring smaller trails around the plateau, Omalos is a paradise for hikers.
  • Photography: The plateau’s natural beauty and panoramic views make it ideal for photography.
  • Winter Activities: During snowy periods, Omalos attracts visitors for snow-related activities.

Why Visit Omalos Plateau?

The Omalos Plateau combines breathtaking natural scenery, cultural heritage, and adventurous activities, making it an essential stop for visitors seeking an authentic Cretan experience.
