The Diktaean Cave (or Dikteon Cave) is one of the most significant mythological and archaeological sites on Crete, located on the slopes of Mount Dikti in the Lasithi Plateau. It is famously believed to be the birthplace of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. According to ancient Greek mythology, Rhea hid her newborn son Zeus in this cave to protect him from his father, Cronus, who had been consuming his children in fear of a prophecy that one would overthrow him.

The cave has long been a site of worship, with evidence of its use dating back to the Neolithic period (around 2800 BCE) and continuing through the Minoan and later periods. Archaeological finds from the cave include offerings to the gods, such as figurines and ritual items like double axes, which suggest its role as a cult center

In addition to its mythological importance, the cave is linked with several key figures in Greek mythology, including the Harpies, who are said to have inhabited the cave, and the legendary seer Epimenides, who is associated with it as well.
