The St. George Selinaris Monastery (or Agios Georgios Selinaris) is a beloved monastery located along the National Road between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos, nestled in the picturesque Selinari Gorge on the Greek island of Crete. Dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint often associated with protection and healing, the monastery is a revered stop for locals and travelers alike, who frequently pause to light a candle and say a prayer for safe journeys.

Historical Background and Legend

The origins of the St. George Selinaris Monastery date back to the early Venetian period, though exact records are unclear. A well-known local legend holds that the monastery was founded after an icon of Saint George was miraculously discovered in a cave within the gorge. According to the story, the icon was found by a shepherd who noticed his flock mysteriously gathering around the cave. This event was seen as a divine sign, leading to the establishment of a small chapel, which later grew into the monastery.

Throughout history, the monastery has served as a spiritual haven and is especially cherished for its reputation as a place of healing. It is said that Saint George, as the patron saint of the monastery, watches over travelers passing through the gorge, offering protection to all who seek his blessings.

Architectural and Spiritual Features

The St. George Selinaris Monastery features a small but beautiful chapel dedicated to Saint George, with traditional Cretan architectural elements. Inside, the church houses icons of Saint George and other saints, as well as a number of votive offerings from those who have experienced healing or received blessings at the monastery. A newer, larger church was added in more recent years to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims.

The monastery is surrounded by the dramatic landscape of the Selinari Gorge, with steep rock faces, cypress trees, and rugged terrain. This natural setting adds to the monastery’s spiritual appeal, creating a tranquil atmosphere for reflection and prayer. A path leads to the original cave where the icon of Saint George was reportedly found, and visitors often walk up to this cave to pay their respects.

Local Customs and Traditions

As the protector of travelers, Saint George is highly venerated at Selinaris Monastery. Many people traveling along the road between Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos stop at the monastery to light a candle and pray for safety. On April 23rd, the feast day of Saint George, the monastery hosts celebrations and services that attract pilgrims from around Crete and beyond, with people gathering to honor the saint’s protective spirit and seek his blessings.

Visiting the Monastery

Today, the St. George Selinaris Monastery is a popular site for both locals and tourists. It offers an authentic glimpse into the spiritual traditions of Crete, as well as a peaceful place to pause and experience the natural beauty of the Selinari Gorge. The monastery is open to the public, with a welcoming atmosphere that invites travelers to connect with its history and reverent ambiance.
